Erins Own took on Castlemartyr in the 2nd Round of the East Cork Junior Football Championship last Friday in Cobh. We had numerous players unavailable for the game for various reasons. We still fielded a strong team and started the game well. Jack Sheehan produced a storming run through the defence to net a great goal, along with some fine points by Shane Murphy, Alan Bowen and James Taylor. This put us in a strong position midway through the first half. At one point, the lead was 6 but Castlemartyr rallied and finished the half strongly. The score line read 1-06 to 1-05 in our favour at half time.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first half. We began the half well again and stretched the lead to five points with ten minutes to go. Castlemartyr never gave up and had the lead back to three points going into the final minutes. We hung on to win on a score line reading 1-13 to 1-10. Andrew Power, Patrick Fitzgerald and Alan Bowen gave strong performances throughout the game.
We have now been drawn to play St Catherine’s in the third round of the Michael O Connor sponsored East Cork Junior Football Championship. This takes place on Thursday 31.05.2018 with the time and venue tbc.
