The East Cork Under 21 ‘A’ Hurling Championship Final
Erin’s Own 1-08
By Derek Kiely
MIDLETON lifted the East Cork under 21A hurling championship title with a very impressive victory over Erin’s Own in Lisgoold on Saturday evening.
The Erin’s Own players battled to the final whistle and gave it everything they had, but at the end of the day this Midleton side are simply too good for any side in the Imokilly Division at present.
Midleton dominated both halfs, with the wind in the first half the ‘Magpies’ sent a barrage of balls into the Erin’s Own defence.Early strikes from Paul Haughney, Luke O’Farrell, Conor Lehane and Cormac Walsh set the tone of the game, in resistance for Erin’s Own Mark Collins popped over a couple of points.
The first goal of the match came after some sustained Midleton pressure and once Luke O’Farrell caught hold of the ball 12 meters out there was only going to be one outcome, as the Midleton full forward shot past the Erin’s Own keeper Paul Ryan, who had little chance of saving the shot. O’Farrell was on target with a point seconds later and then the goal of the final, as a ball played in low to Patrick Whyte was turned and lifted in one movement and then sent rocketing into the roof of the Erin’s Own net, still all in one movement, it was truly a spectacular effort.
Midleton added on more points at leisure, Erin’s Own could only rely on Mark Collins for scores. The second half was more even in terms of scoring, Midleton only outscored Erin’s Own by a point, but the ‘Magpies’ had to play into a very stiff breeze.
The second half produced two high points with goals for both sides with Paul Hughney netting for Midleton and Maurice O’Carroll scoring for Erin’s Own, but the downside to the whole day was the sending off of two players with five minutes to go when Ian Kennifick got his marching orders for Midleton and Niall Scanlon was dismissed for Erin’s Own.
Midleton will now contest the county semi final.
