Please find attached note on the recent skills testing we carried out on all kids.
Also, please note that over the first 2 weeks in July a number of the coaches will be away on holidays but a few of the senior hurlers will step in to ensure we have adequate supervision and coaching. Training will continue as usual every Saturday morning from 10.30-12 (Hurling) and Wednesday evening from 7-8pm.
Erins Own U8 Hurling Skills Testing
As you know, we recently carried out a number of skills tests on all the children and the results of the tests have now been complied and analysed by the coaches. This work was completed by a sub-group of coaches who tested all the children to ensure there was consistency in the testing across the group. At this stage we would like to provide the parents with some feedback on this process which we think may be of interest.
Purpose of the Testing
The purpose of the testing was to ensure that all the children are being taught the fundamental skills that would be considered reasonable for their age and also considering the length of time they have been training with Erins Own.
This then allows the coaches to identify any cases where there are gaps that need to be addressed to ensure that all children are developing a good foundation that they can build on into the future should they wish to continue hurling. This will help each child to reach his potential and enjoy the game to its fullest.
It also allows the coaches to identify certain skills which may have been neglected in training and so we can then change the focus of our activities to address this.
A selection of high-level graphs is included below for your information to get an idea of the results and some of the skills tested. While there is a broad range of skills across the group, the core skills that we want all the children to have at this stage are:
· Hurley size: is the hurley too long or short
· Correct Grip & Positions
o Dominant hand established and placed at top of hurley
o Non-dominant hand used for catching
· Swing : fluid swing and feet in correct position for balance
· Ground Strike: proper ground strike executed off both sides
· Balance: ensure all skills are taught using both sides to ensure the child is equally comfortable regardless of where the ball is.
If your child is interested in practicing a little at home, then that will have the biggest impact on their development. To help encourage this, over the coming weeks we will be setting a weekly challenge at the end of every training session to try and stimulate more home practicing.
In conclusion, hopefully you find this information useful and don’t hesitate to contact any of the coaches should you have any queries on any aspect of the process.
