On Saturday 5th of July 2014 in Caherlag we had an U6 Train the Parent Fun Training Day.
The plan was to have a fun training day with all U6s and their parents which turn out to be great success. We had 31 U6’s and between coaches and parents we had about 30 parents.
We started with the U6’s doing warm up games and got all the parents together to go through the agenda for the day and some basic information on hurling. We then sent the U6’s to the drill stations and the parents followed their kids to these drill stations. This was the U6’s time to shine and show their parents the skills that they had learned at training and they did this very well. The U6’s did the drills first with their parents following suit. The parents did well but could do with a few more training sessions!!!!!. When both U6’s and parents had done all the drills, we had a few fun hurling games where it was U6’s V Parents. The U6’s tested their parents in these fun games and after two games I could here a few parents panting and the U6s delighted as they had the their parents under pressure. But it looked like everyone was enjoying themselves.
Then we had fun matches U6’s V Parents and there was no holding back from both sides, the U6s loving the chance to play their Moms and Dads in a game of hurling with the competitive side coming out in the parents but the U6s still came out on top. We then gave the parents a chance to redeem themselves with a game of Tug-a-war again U6’s V Parents. This was hard fought but the U6’s with the better fitness won!!!!!.
After we got a few group pictures taken, everyone went into the club house for some tea, scones & biscuits for the parents and juice and fruit for the kids. It was a great opportunity for the parents to mingle which was great to see.
The day was a great success for both U6’s and parents and it was great to see the U6’s and parents laughing and joking with each other during the day. Special thanks to all the U6 coaches for helping out on the day and for helping out all year. Also thanks to Stephanie Bowen & Dara Finn for all the hard work in the kitchen.
